Condition

Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition that affects the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body. This nerve runs from your lower back, through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg. When something puts pressure on or irritates the sciatic nerve, it can lead to pain, discomfort, and a range of other symptoms.

While sciatica is often caused by nerve compression or inflammation, it’s important to note that the pain can vary in severity and may be managed with the right treatment plan.

What Causes Sciatica

Sciatica typically occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed by an underlying condition in the spine. Some of the most common causes include:

Piriformis Syndrome

In this condition, the piriformis muscle, located in the buttocks, spasms and irritates the sciatic nerve.

Spondylolisthesis

This condition occurs when one vertebra slips forward over another, which can cause nerve compression and sciatica symptoms.

What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica

Sciatica manifests itself through a variety of symptoms, but the most common include:

This pain is typically felt on one side of the body and can range from mild to severe.

Many individuals with sciatica experience a "pins and needles" sensation in the affected leg or foot.

Some may experience weakness in the leg, making it difficult to move or control.

The discomfort and pain often worsen with extended sitting or standing.

Certain activities like bending, twisting, or sneezing can exacerbate sciatica pain.

These symptoms can vary in intensity and duration, and they may be intermittent or constant. It is important to seek medical advice if these symptoms persist or worsen over time.

What Does Sciatica Pain Feel Like?

The pain associated with sciatica can take different forms, depending on the underlying cause and the individual. Common descriptions of sciatica pain include:

  • Sharp, shooting pain: Often felt in the lower back, buttocks, or legs, this can be intense and sudden.
  • Burning or aching pain: Some individuals report a deep, aching pain that radiates down the leg.
  • Electric shock-like pain: Some may experience a jolting sensation, similar to an electric shock, particularly during certain movements.
  • Tingling and numbness: In addition to pain, tingling, and numbness can be felt in the affected leg, foot, or toes.

The intensity of pain can vary, but many people find that it worsens when they engage in activities like sitting for extended periods, standing up, or bending over. The discomfort can also affect the ability to sleep or concentrate, making it more challenging to go about daily life.

How Is Sciatica Diagnosed?

Diagnosing sciatica typically begins with a comprehensive medical history and physical exam. In some cases, additional diagnostic imaging is required to determine the root cause of the sciatica. These tests may include:

X-rays

These can help rule out other causes of pain, such as fractures or tumors, and can identify issues like bone spurs or changes in the spine’s alignment.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

An MRI can give a more detailed view of the soft tissues, such as the discs and nerves, helping to identify herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or other conditions causing nerve compression.

CT Scan

A CT scan may also be used to get detailed images of the spine and surrounding tissues.

Sciatica Treatments in Singapore

Treatment for sciatica depends on the severity and cause of the condition.

Physical Therapy

Exercises designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles of the back and legs can help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve and improve flexibility.

Medications

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate mild pain. In more severe cases, prescription pain medications, muscle relaxants, or anti-inflammatory drugs may be recommended.

Epidural Steroid Injections

In some cases, an injection of corticosteroids into the epidural space around the spinal cord can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Microdiscectomy

A minimally invasive procedure to remove herniated discs compressing the sciatic nerve.

Laminectomy

The removal of part of the vertebra to relieve pressure on the nerve roots.

Spinal Fusion

A procedure to stabilise the spine by joining two or more vertebrae together.

Exercise And Stretches For Sciatica Pain

To manage sciatica pain, exercises and stretches can help improve mobility and reduce discomfort. Always consult your spine specialist before starting any routine.

  • Piriformis Stretch
  • Hamstring Stretch
  • Bridges
  • Planks
  • Walking
  • Swimming
